Dorise Hebenstreit, AMFT #111920

I would like to introduce myself. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT111920) in the state of California. I earned my Master’s degree from Hope International University in Anaheim in May of 2017. I wanted to become a therapist because I have a passion for working with people to see the best that they can be in themselves. I help them see their capabilities in themself and reach their healthiest potential. It’s ok to mess up and still live life well as you recover from issues in your own time. My outlook in life for you is to be optimistic and positive and to live each day to its fullest. We can face life and its challenges head-on. We do this by empowering ourselves to do our individual best and not let our past trauma, family environment, and negative influences label us. I work individually with each client’s particular needs and goals. I will be there alongside you in your journey. I will be able to help you look positively at your challenges as you progress. I truly believe in you.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma can bring on symptoms that may include flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, avoidance, negative changes in thinking which are persistent blame, fear, anger, guilt and shame and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. Some traumas can also affect memory, concentration, and sleep issues.

I specialize in treating trauma and PTSD, even in children and adolescents. My clients were survivors of sexual abuse and witnessing the violence of loved ones and themselves. I specialize in positive strengths and resilience as we reduce negative self-sabotaging beliefs.

Depression:

Depressing thoughts can change a healthy everyday mindset, low motivation, loss of sleep, appetite, and energy, poor concentration, aggregation, and thoughts of death. I have experience working as a school counselor and clinical therapist.

Anxiety:

Anxiety in everyday life is normal, excessive anxiety is not. Excessive anxiety is persistent worrying, and fear of everyday situations. Often anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). Anxiety symptoms also can be persistent sweating, rapid breathing and high heart rate, concentration issues, and trouble sleeping. These anxious moments can stem from childhood and adult situations. I find challenging these anxious thoughts can help desensitize the thought and give you control.

Evidence-Based Practices:

These therapeutic modalities I implemented Person-Centered Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Art and Play Sand Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution Focused. I also have training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EMT).

Person-Centered

Person-centered therapy is a non-directive approach to talk therapy. Here the client actively takes the reins during each therapy session, and through the client's reinforced support allows the client to take over and empower oneself. Also, I implement empathy and unconditional positive regard in the session.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR):

I also use EMDR in my practice to treat past trauma ranging from an acute and isolated event to years of insidious and chronic incidents. Following trauma, I use EMDR to treat depression-related issues, which can include low mood, helplessness, worthlessness, loss of interest in activities, poor sleep, low self-esteem, and passive and active suicidal ideation. EMDR can be effective for treating anxiety-related conditions such as social anxiety, performance anxiety, generalized anxiety, and panic attacks,

Anxiety is also associated with with “stuck” thinking habits, a perseveration on past, present or future situations. EMDR employs a three-pronged approach (targeting a past, present, or future target), so the disturbance does not have to be a past situation. It can also be a hypothetical, stress-inducing event in the future that would trigger symptoms of anxiety.

Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(TF-CBT):

I work with children and my families, and caregivers in overcoming the emotional and mental health needs of struggling to overcome the destructive effects of early trauma.

Motivational Interviewing (MI):

MI is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding and strengthening motivational change, to strengthen a client's own motivation for commitment to change. We look at how we talk about ourselves, and use “change talk”, instead of a label we hear from others or yourself like you are, or I am lazy we change to talk to, “I am trying my best”. This can also help clients to build their self-worth.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT)

With a non-blaming and respectful stance in therapy focus on person-present, more goal-oriented, solving problems now. For current issues, I aim to help my clients find strengths and resources to continue in a healthier goal directed solution. This type of therapy also can help develop self-worth.

Emotional Focused Therapy

I have extensive training in EFT. This sometimes is a short-term therapy that helps focus you on your relationships and attachment/bonding. We look at patterns in your relationship and take steps to create a more secure bond and develop more trust to move the relationship in a healthier, more positive direction. Therefore allowing you both to communicate in the session one on one as I observe the dialogue/emotions in the relationship and help then restore interaction and encouragement along the way.

Art and Play Sand Therapy

Children and adolescents have a lot of expectations from others (caregivers and peers) and being too busy with school etc. which can sometimes lead to depression and anxiety, and early attachment disorders. I find it easier to express these feelings and emotions through art and sand play therapy. When ready this can help in developing a safe place/relationship between us. I feel this type of therapy is essential in encouraging and developing one's autonomy and worth.

Expect Great Things As You Are Worth Every Good Endeavor

My approach is to process the trauma or event ( internal or external) that seems to decrease our abilities/motives to move forward. I work with each individual’s particular area of concern like self-esteem, behavioral issues, self-regulate one’s emotions, and decrease negative beliefs of self.

I feel it’s so important to look at things in a positive mindset but still being able to process our feelings openly and deeply which is an important step towards healing.

I provide individual therapy sessions for 50 minutes at $140 per session and couples sessions for 50 minutes at $160 per session. I would be happy to support you in your healing process.

Feel free to contact me for a free 20-minute consultation. I am looking forward to working with you, please contact me with any questions. Thank you!
