Humans don’t wake up easily, they often need a crisis to change the inner level. The most important step towards healing is to address the unresolved emotion inside you. Healing requires feeling. Acceptance slowly dissolves pain. Shadow work call it inner work, goes back to childhood but shows up in adulthood. It just wants to feel understood. When we forgive for our inner peace, we become empowered. Therapy is a space for your unspoken truth to be discovered and explored. Embrace the moment, you’ll really get to know what your true essence is. When we function from the fear and scarring of our trauma, the cycles continue until we learn how to transmute that energy. Is it time to take charge of your inner well-being? Creating time for introspection, can give you a new direction as we become aware of what hurts us the most, grows us the most. I will support, nurture and honor your life’s journey with universal compassion.

My name is Hazzel Angulo, and I’m a Bilingual (Spanish/English) speaking Associate Marriage and Family Therapist under the supervision of Hong Jeong, LCSW #87224. I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Brandman University with an emphasis on Marriage and Family Therapy and my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at University of California, Santa Barbara.

I apply a Holistic approach that considers all mental and social factors influencing the presenting problem, rather than only focusing on the symptoms. An integrative approach addresses the roots of the disorder by addressing the whole person, including its ecosystem- family, school/occupation, peers and community.

Trauma and PTSD:

Trauma brings on intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, distress, physiological reactivity, avoidance behavior, persistent blame, negative beliefs, fear/anger/guilt/shame, detachment, inability to experience positive emotions, irritability, self-destructive behavior, hypervigilance, exaggerated startled response, concentration and sleep disturbances.

I specialize in treating trauma and PTSD, using a trauma informed care lens to highlight strengths and resiliency while managing a reduction of negative symptoms by processing unresolved emotions. I have extensive experience working with survivors of abuse, neglect, abandonment and intimate partner violence.

Depression

Depression brings on losing touch with experiences that were once fulfilling, changes with sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, psychomotor agitation and thoughts of death. I specialize in depression, suicidal ideation and self-harming behaviors. I have extensive experience working for a crisis hotline, safety planning and ensuring psychiatric hospitalization to stabilize.

Anxiety

Anxiety brings on difficulty managing excessive worrying, restlessness, fatigue, irritability, muscle tension, changes in concentration and sleep. Having lived with anxiety from childhood to adulthood, I grew up accepting anxiety would be a part of me for my entire life. I felt powerless, out of control, and embarrassed. Therapy became a platform to be ‘seen’ and ‘heard,’ finally facing my fears and reaching inner peace. I invite you to step into your power and live a life without anxiety.

Evidenced- Based Practices:

I implement various modality’s including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Practice, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Cognitive Behavioral Therapy demonstrates how irrational beliefs contribute to uncomfortable emotions and unwanted behavior. These thoughts are identified, challenged, and replaced with more objective, realistic thoughts.

Mindfulness Practice: Our minds habitually go from reflecting on the past one moment, to worrying about the future at the next moment, with very little time spent on being fully present. By engaging in visualization, deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or body scans we can increase focus in the present moment, optimizing your well-being.

Motivational Interviewing (MI): Individuals are generally better persuaded by the reasons they themselves discover. MI encourages autonomy in decision making, emphasizing control and choice when struggling with ambivalence on a presenting issue. This modality supports self-efficacy while highlighting discrepancy’s in behavior.

Solution Focused Therapy (SFT): Solution Focused Therapy encourages solution-building, focusing on current resources and future hopes in order to utilize own strengths to achieve true potential in resolving current stressors. This modality is supportive of self-development, growth and responsibility.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): One way to understand how EMDR therapy works is to think of life experiences as a file system. When experiences cause distress, or are traumatic, the brain’s ability to normally sort, discard, and move files to long term storage can stop filing correctly. These difficult experiences can stay “stuck” and feel as if they are happening in the present, over and over. EMDR can assist in removing the emotional charge through eye movements or tapping, allowing the regular brain processes to start sorting and filing these experiences, emotions, and physical sensations in a way that makes sense. This modality would support you in clearing any emotional charge associated with a trauma.
