Laurel Salmon, AMFT #133685

The journey to self-discovery is often filled with several bumps along the way and rarely comes with a road map.  These detours can manifest themselves in physical, mental, and emotional forms such as anxiety, depression, and illness that can be hard to navigate on one’s own. Through the use of integrative modalities, my goal is to help you find your way so that you can feel your best, discover who you truly are, and move forward in the direction of your dreams – whereby your past no longer holds you back.

My name is Laurel Salmon and I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist working under the supervision of Hong Jeong, LCSW #87224. I completed my two-year accredited master’s degree program at Antioch University, Los Angeles after attending Loyola Marymount University for my undergraduate study.  My approach is largely solution-focused and is uniquely tailored to each individual’s wants and needs.  Utilizing an integrative approach of CBT, mindfulness, and psychodynamic perspectives, I provide therapy through a holistic lens, aiming to see my clients from a full picture rather than just their symptomatology.  I work primarily with young adults to treat clinical issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, relationships, identity, & self-esteem.

I facilitate the therapeutic process by asking thought-provoking questions as well as engaging in active listening so that my clients feel both validated as well as challenged.  This is how I believe change occurs.  Through curiosity, determination, and patience, I help my clients to become the best version of themselves.

I have specialized training in both TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy), as well as certification in Holistic Health Counseling.  My dynamic approach incorporates these trainings as well as the mind, body, and spirit into the therapeutic process to allow my clients to understand and analyze their past, be present in the here and now, and see positive changes for the future.

Being born and raised in Los Angeles has hugely shaped me and my approach to health.  Staying active, fit, and healthy is not just a lifestyle, it’s a way of being – both in the body and in the mind.  I’ve found countless ways in which the mind-body connection can be utilized to increase an overall sense of health and happiness.  Using food and movement as medicine, my holistic approach shows time and time again that where the mind goes, the body flows, and vice versa.

Depression & Anxiety:

Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling and treatment, I am able to help you recover the motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.

Trauma, Relationships, & Life Transitions:

Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances. Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. I can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing, as well as strengthen your current relationships so that you can successfully transition to the next stage in your life.

Identity & Self-Esteem:

The quest for purpose can be an ongoing life struggle for many as human beings all share the universal desire to be seen, heard, and understood. I utilize a directive approach to assist my clients on the journey of self-discovery.  Leaning on positivity and connection, I help my clients find both what makes them happy as well as discover who they truly are.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH:

My approach to treatment combines evidence-based treatment models like CBT and psychodynamic therapy with holistic interventions such as mindfulness and health coaching to create a well-rounded, balanced, effective state of healing.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) provides a means to manage challenges by looking at the way thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. CBT is most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression.

Psychodynamic Therapy: Psychodynamic Therapy explores the ways in which the past affects the present.  By bringing this awareness from the unconscious into the conscious, behavior patterns can be addressed and understood in order to make better, more positive choices for the future.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness creates a sense of awareness that is free of judgment in order to observe how thoughts and behaviors affect everyday life.  Interventions such as meditation, gratitude, breathwork, and grounding techniques help assist both in managing depression and anxiety as well as seeing goals manifested.

Trauma-Informed: TF-CBT addresses and improves symptoms of post-traumatic stress in youth and adolescents.  Utilizing cognitive behavioral techniques to help modify distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviors, symptoms can be alleviated and new coping skills can emerge.

Holistic & Integrative: Holistic health coaching uses a functional nutrition approach to improve the function of body systems and organs with specific medicinal foods, exercises, and lifestyle habits.  By integrating the mind, body, and spirit, clients’ individual goals and needs are assessed from a whole-body approach.
