Living in the present moment is difficult in today’s stimulating environment. When we wake up, we immediately look at our phones. TikTok videos, gossip on social media and world news stimulates our brain and we lose focus on the present moment. And unfortunately, it’s easy to become addicted to high stimulation. Granted, I have to be mindful of my phone usage. Otherwise, I automatically seek things to stimulate my brain. Today, I’d like to discuss what mindfulness is by using the concepts from sensorimotor Psychotherapy. In addition, we will practice mindfulness-based actionable tools to relieve anxiety. Let’s dive in.
The five building blocks include emotions, body sensations, movement, five sense perceptions, and thoughts. Bringing present-moment awareness to these building blocks can provide a centerpiece for finding healing and balance.
There are many ways to be mindful and oriented to the present moment. Let’s look at some examples:
-Mobilize your body through space by walking, jogging, running, dancing, or even skipping and jumping.
-Relax and release tension in your body.
-Center and ground your body.
-Pay attention to your breathing.
-Self-touch is also an important tool that can help examine the state of your body.
Every moment is new, and each moment will soon pass. Mindfulness is about creating new experiences. To do so, we need awareness and concentration on these five building blocks. Embracing wholeness is key here. Anxiety or intense feelings can limit our awareness and options. Let’s focus on all the building blocks of the present moment.
